Cultivated is an independent publisher, studio and teaching practice. It exists to notice things, deconstruct them, make something from them, and find useful ways to let those ideas travel — mostly in the context of work, because most of us have to work, and the work could always be a little bit better.

Welcome to Cultivated

Hi, I'm Rob.

I spend my time studying and noticing how ideas, people, places and work actually behave – and turning what I find into essays, photographs, films, books, courses, workshops, talks, and advisory work.

Underneath all of it: a single practice – learning to see what's really going on – and a system called Idea to Value that runs beneath the writing.

If you want the fuller story of the practice and why it exists, that's on the About page. Otherwise, here's where the work lives.

If you only read one thing

Mottainai — on the deeper reverence for what already exists

A Japanese idea about treating time, effort and human potential with the respect they deserve. It's the closest thing I have to a manifesto, and everything else here grows out of it.

If you're curious about…

  • Why some workplaces make people more creative, engaged and fulfilled than others
  • Why so many people are told to quit their jobs, when most of us still have to work — and what to do about that instead
  • Why communication is so often the difference between an idea landing and stalling
  • How the conditions around an idea determine what becomes of it
  • How ideas actually become value
  • How to develop better judgement rather than collecting more frameworks
  • Why many workplaces have forgotten the importance of books, good lighting and good tea
  • Whether work can be more thoughtful, more human, and more meaningful — without sacrificing commercial results

Then you're probably in the right place.

For your own reading and practice

Most of what I make is free.

The Writing is where most of the thinking lives — over two hundred essays on work, communication, creativity, and how ideas become value.

If you'd rather have it delivered, Meeting Notes is a weekly letter with new writing and whatever I've been noticing. It's the easiest way to keep in touch.

Field Guides are the books and courses — practical work for people who want to put the ideas into their own practice. The Life of an Idea is the calm entry point; Idea to Sustainable Work is for people making their own independent way; the full Practitioner's Handbook lives inside Studio. There is also Zero to Keynote, Workshop Mastery and Take a Day Off.

The Studio is the workshop behind the shop — a working community for readers who want to make things alongside the practice, not just read about it. Five pounds a month, monthly Department of Interesting Things editions, the full Idea to Value Practitioner's Handbook, members' essays, and a direct line to me. Most of what I make stays free because Studio is part of what keeps it that way.

For your team or organisation

If you're bringing this work into an organisation, three doors into the same practice.

Talks and keynotes — story-led sessions on communication, creativity, and how ideas become value. Award-winning, delivered across Europe, useful the same afternoon. For conferences, leadership events, and company kick-offs.

Workshops — hands-on days that shift what a team can see, say and do. Communication, collaboration, creativity, and the underlying question of how good work actually moves. Scoped to the specific team, never off-the-shelf. Some workshops now include an option to make something the company keeps — a film, a podcast episode, a set of posters — as a form of the ideas themselves.

Advisory — for leaders, founders and organisations that want an interesting mind in the room while a complicated idea moves. Usually starts with a short, priced reading of the situation called The Read.

Different depths of engagement, same underlying job — helping ideas move from we should and we could and we are, into we did — and making sure it's worth being part of the work that gets them there.

Elsewhere in the house

Alongside Cultivated I run Creative Soul Projects — a YouTube channel for individuals interested in creative work, learning, thinking and building independently. It's where much of the video work lives, including Word@Work — a series about ordinary words we use at work, and what noticing them properly reveals. Cultivated and Creative Soul Projects aren't separate businesses; they're two windows onto the same person, looking at slightly different rooms.

I keep a Public Commonplace – a running collection of what I've been reading, noticing, and turning over. Fridays, published as short reels or image posts on Instagram (Simplylambert). It's the study underneath the writing – closer to the raw material than the finished essays.

I also co-host Stationery Freaks with Helen Lisowski – a podcast about analogue tools, notebooks, and the everyday objects we use to think and work. It's been downloaded more than forty thousand times. It looks like a hobby kept clear of the serious work. It isn't. The noticing is where most of the thinking starts.

And if you'd like to know a bit more about who's behind all of this, there's a page for that.

I lecture and run sessions for students and educators — on communication, creativity, and how ideas become value. If that would be useful where you teach, I'd like to hear from you.

Value beyond profit

Five percent of profit from the books, courses and membership is given each year to Naomi House — the hospice caring for life-limited children and their families. Because every system should create value beyond profit.

Have a wander. If something here turns out to be useful, that's the whole idea.
